I could have stayed in tonight and watched Shane Black as Hawkins in the legendary 1987 movie Predator. But as Liz was due to go out on a hen night tonight, I took the opportunity to get a ticket for the only showing in Odeon Hereford of his latest directorial offering instead.
This is my first film for June and, after seeing the trailers I was looking forward to it..
Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling play thug and private investigator (respectively) in 1970's LA. Their paths cross when Russels character, Jackson Healy is hired to beat up Holland March (Ryan Gosling). They then team up to try and find a missing girl and it goes pear shaped..
I'm fully aware of Mr Blacks previous work (I loved Ironman 3). Not to mention Lethal Weapon and The Last Boyscout.. (I really must look up Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). And this one didn't let me down. Both Crowe and Gosling were very funny and the film didn't linger too long on sentimental backstories. The comedy got a bit slapstick at certain points in the film, but that just helped to emphasis how idiotic they both were..
The supporting roles where good too, particularly Angourie Rice who played Ryan's 13 year old daughter.
Overall an entertaining movie (and a full screening too)
