Tommorowland

OK, here's the official blurb..

"Whenever Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) touches a lapel pin with the letter T on it, she finds herself transported to Tomorrowland, a city filled with huge robots and sleek buildings. The gifted young woman recruits the help of scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney), a previous visitor to Tomorrowland, who years ago made a startling discovery about the future. Together, the two adventurers travel to the metropolis to uncover its mysterious secrets, as the fate of mankind hangs in the balance."
Now that sounds exciting doesn't it?.. I'm a sucker for a good science fiction movie and this one ticked all the boxes.. I was gripped throughout most of the film and was tempted to watch it again the next day..The two leads were good and, more importantly convincing. The special effects were top quality too. So why has it had such a bad rap? The last time I looked it's 'Rotten Tomatoes' score was 50%.. Which is pretty lame..
All I can say is I loved it! ****

Mad Max: Fury Road

I remember back in the early eighties when I was still in school and life hadn't repeatedly punched me in the face as it does today, Paul Windsor and I would often nip back to his house on Baycham Street to watch a pirate video or two.. VHS were at war with Betamax at the time and Paul' family had sided with VHS. This consequently offered him a larger library from which to chose.. Along with some dodgy porn and truly appalling horror films, one such diamond in the rough was Mad Max. To be fair the only two things I remember from that film were Pauls love of Max's car and scene featuring a half naked women (sorry, dodgy porn again..)
It wasn't until college and the superior Mad Max 2 that I started to take interest.. Fury Road has both these films DNA running right though it..
If you're looking for a plot synopsis I'll try... Basically Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Thereon) steals a truck and runs for the hills.. During the chase she manages to attract a couple of stragglers in the form of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and Nux (Nicolas Hoult avoiding being typecast and playing a hairless, white weirdo)..
To be fair, a plot is not really required for this movie..
When I first came out I struggled to register what I'd just seen.. Was that a mutant,  midget, baby man? Was a cesarian performed mid-chase? Was a man playing a flame powered guitar?? And more to the point, why?
Try to imagine a slim Barry from Eastenders and a one armed Sinead O'Conner driving though the desert in a Ford Capri on halftracks instead of wheels, being chased by the Great Goblin and the cast of Glee with their grandparents, brandishing 6 foot long bendy brooms with exploding brush heads. Throw in a few Victoria Secret models and some crows on stilts and you're somewhere near..

The fact that it's a 15 certificate is a welcome break from the current trend of 12a, child friendly tosh (Taken 3 anyone..?). The post apocalyptic set design was excellent too.
It's nice to see 'bat shit' crazy in a summer blockbuster and I thoroughly it..
**** movie (gonna try and catch another viewing too)
