Daddy's Home

Ok, let's get the synopsis out of the way.. Will Ferrel is Brad Whitaker, the struggling step-father to Megan & Dylan. Just when he thinks he's getting through to them along comes their biological father, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg). If you've seen the trailer you get the basic idea..

And it kinda works.. This film was funnier than it deserved to be.. It could have been 'The Other Guys II'.  Will Ferrel plays the same character he always plays.. Good natured, positive and ultimately naive (plus he has a really attractive wife as in The Other Guys)
As a 'Step Dad' myself this film appealed to me and I kind of related to Will Ferrel's character (slightly). Plus it get funnier as the movie progresses..
Overall an entertaining ***.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (4th viewing)

Ok.. Round 4... Yeah, it's still good.

In The Heart Of The Sea

Once again I'm here for my traditional Boxing day movie.. The quality of these films has varied over the last few years. Sherlock Holmes II was a high point.. Where as last year's Exodus was a definite low!

I tried to pursued Graham to see this one as it's based on the true story of the final voyage of Nantucket's Essex. A whaleing ship that was destroyed by a great white sperm whale in the 1700's.. The story that inspired Moby Dick.. I obviously didin't sell it well enough because once again I ended up sat on my own..
Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) play Captain and first mate respectively of the aforementioned doomed ship..

I was hoping for a 'Master and Commander II', which is probably aiming a bit high to be fair.. This certainly is no Master and Commander but it wasn't as bad as it's been labelled. There was attention to detail and the performances were good.. My main gripe was the CGI whale which just didn't work for me.. In the same way Jaws isn't about the shark you could argue this film isn't about a whale, but more about the ship and it's crew.. And in that respect I enjoyed it..

Overall not a bad ***1/2.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 3D (2nd viewing)

Yep, it's still good.. Is it better in 3D? It's difficult to make something this good better... Space always looks good in 3D (see Gravity, The Martian etc..)
Talking of which I feel the 'Gravity' viewing record could be threatened.. We'll see

Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Ummm, what can I say about this one? Ok, brief synopsis before I go full nerd!
This one is set 30(ish) years after 'Return Of The Jedi' and Luke Skywalker's gone AWOL, the empire has restarted in the form of The First Order and it's all looking a bit ummm..
To be honest I was slightly concerned the hype would do a 'Dark Knight Returns' or 'Skyfall' on this one and the movie wouldn't be able to live up to it.. Plus you've got the travesty of episodes 1,2 and 3 still simmering in the depths of my memory (despite repeated attempts to push them deep down into the darkness so they'll never bother me again..) And let's not forget the truly awesome trailers which  got my hopes and expectations to the point of explosion..

The fact that I've taken a day off work, travelled all the way to Cardiff and have biked into town to watch a 12.05am showing says something about my opinion of the Star Wars* franchise. Don't get me wrong, I haven't gone full 'cos play', 'Darth Vader ringtone' nerd out just yet. Although after this movie I feel I'm teetering on the edge of that particular cliff ledge of insanity...
A lot like Gravity, I was hooked on this movie from the beginning. The opening traditional introduction  crawled up the screen and it made sense... No mention of trade embargoes or any of that crap.. The film itself seemed to have an almost analogue feel about. I know there was probably an enormous amount of CGi in it but it didn't really show that much.. There were several 'pin prick' moments throughout the movie where all I knew was what was going on on the screen.. The aerial dog fights in particular where expertly choreographed and reminded me of why I love the franchise*. Daisy Ridley and John Boyoga were excellent up against the old cast members too.  The humour was a welcome relief and well placed, helping to make it an all round perfect movie..
My only criticism is that it's too long.. And that's just a personal preference because it means I'm going to struggle to get in multiple viewings...
The best film of the year.. Yes, even better than Mad Max..
It's gotten be *****

* when I say 'Star Wars franchise' I am of course referring to episodes 4,5 and 6..
Just to be straight on that..

Room

Another excellent offering from Odeon's Screen unseen. To be fair I hadn't heard much about this one. I'd seen the trailer and that didn't give too much away. Brie Larson plays a mother living in a small room with her son Jack (Jacob Tremblay). At the start of the film Jack turns 5 and it quickly becomes apparent that he has never seen the outside world.. To say anymore would be treading on spoiler territory but let's just say it's a film of 2 halves..
The two main leads were outstanding, particularly from the young Jack. Also William H Macy and Joan Allen make an appearance to add a little extra gravitas..
All in all it was an excellent film that stays with you long after you've left the cinema.  Plus it's nice to see Odeons Screen Unseen back on form after the disappointing Black Mass..

Overall a lingering ****'s

Isn't wasn't until later that I noticed the ticket actually has the name of the film on it! I'd had it for a week and didn't notice..

Hunger Games: Mocking Jay part 2

Being a bit of a completeist (having seen all of the previous Hunger Games movies) I felt obliged to see this one, the last in the series.. And as the 'star destroyer' of a movie, The Force Awakens is looming on the horizon I thought I'd better get this in before it disappears in its shadow.. So as a result I ended up paying to see this one in the 4.30pm slot before Odeons Screen Unseen. Luckily I managed to get 40% off with a voucher so £4 odd wasn't such a kick in the wallet..
This one carries on straight after Mocking Jay Part 1, and Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is still suffering from the attack she was subject to from Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). She's none to happy and decides to take it apon herself to dispose of President Snow (Donald Sutherland)..
As far as teenage, angst ridden, distopeon nightmare movies go this is probably the best of the bunch.. In my opinion this is mainly down to Miss Lawrence's performance. Although she does have backup from some stellar cast (including the late Philips Seymour Hoffman).
The film tanks along at quite a pace and the ending wasn't what I expected... in a good way..
Overall a fitting end to a quality series. ****

Bridge Of Spies

Another trip to the cinema with Graham, this time to see the latest Spielberg/Hanks collaboration..
OK, quick synopsis.. The year is 1957 and Russia and the USA are in the grip the cold war.. In the beginning of the film we find Tom Hanks, an insurance lawer for a firm in New York being called apon to defend Mark Rylance, who has been arrested for being a Russian spy (penalty of death).. Running parallel with this story we have American airmen being recruited into the CIA in order to piolet the U2 spy plane over Russia.. If you know your history I don't need to say any more.. If you don't Google it..
There's something about a Spielberg film that oozes quality.. The writing, the acting, the cinematography was all top notch.. I loved it. I was particularly impressed with Mark Rylance's performance, who is someone I've not seen anything of (or if I did, I didn't recognise him!)..
Tom Hanks is Tom Hanks, and once again he's excellent..
I also noticed the Grandad from Sham-a-lang-a-dingdong's latest..
Overall, easily a **** movie..

Victor Frankenstein

I was quite intrigued when I heard about this one.. H̶a̶r̶r̶y̶ ̶P̶o̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ Daniel Ratcliffe playing a hunchback. Opposite James 'professor Xavier' McAvoy himself.. Could be interesting...
Ok, quick synopsis first..
Picture this, it's 1800's London and we start with H̶a̶r̶r̶y̶ ̶P̶o̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ Egor performing as a hunchback clown in a grubby looking circus. He has one eye on the beautiful trapeze artist (Jessica Brown Findlay) and the other studying books and sketches on the human anatomy.. Then one evening during a performance the trapeze artist falls from the rope thingy.. Luckily Victor Frankenstein is in the audience and along with Igor  they jump to her aid. Victor is impressed with Igors knowledge and offers him the position of lab assistant.. And it all kicks off..
I'm not sure if I'm being fair to this one. I just didn't enjoy it.. I can't remember if it was funny. It wasn't tense... Or scary... In fact, I'm not sure what it was.?
Just don't bother.. **

The Lady In The Van

Graham was keen to see this one so I ditched Hunger Games:Mocking Jay Part 2 for another day..
This one was based on a true story. The author Alan Bennet takes pity on a 'van lady' who, much to the disapproval of some of his neighbours, has taken refuge in his local street.  He offers her temporary parking on his drive... and she end's up staying for 15 years..

This was an odd one.  Maggie Smith was excellent as the venomous Lady in question, while Alex Jennings does and good 'Alan Bennet'. The film has humour and emotion but for some reason I just wasn't sold.. It was entertaining but not my cup of tea..

Overall ***.

Spectre

He's back.
This is Daniel Craig's 4th incarnation as Bond (and some say final). Here he uncovers a secret, evil organisation (Spectre of the title) and seeks to bring it down..

This is one of my favorite 'Craig' Bond's so far (2nd to Casino Royal). After everyone gushed over Skyfall (and I didn't get it.. really) I wasn't expecting too much of this one.. As it happens though it was very good. The action set pieces were well choreographed and Daniel Craig has really set the bar high for the next Mr Bond.. Perhaps I need to re-watch Skyfall..

Crimson Peak

This one was tough.. Nothing to do with the movie but the fact that me and my liver weren't getting along and as a result I wasn't firing on all cylinders.. Let's be honest, I had a job starting the engine in the first place..

Anyhoo, back to the film...
In my opinion Guillermo Del Toro is one of the greatest cinema visionaries alive today. His back catalog contains some of my favorites with the likes of Blade 2, Hellboy 1 & 2 and the excellent Pans Labyrinth... I've even forgiven him for Pacific Rim (I ought to watch that again really).. So with this in mind I was looking forward to this one..

Ok, synopsis.. Mia Wasikowska (she of Tracks and The Double) plays Edith Cushing, the daughter of a wealthy business man who "see's ghosts". Along comes Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom 'Loki' Hiddleston) and his sister Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica 'Mama' Chastain).  After Tom fails to get funding from Edith's father for a venture he's embarking on back in England, he decides to 'court' Edith.. Anyway, to cut a long story short, they end up getting married and head off to 'Crimson Peak' in England..

A lot of people have complained that this film is not scary enough for a horror.. Actually it's billed as a Gothic Romance so shouldn't be scary anyway.
I enjoyed it. Guillermo style and attention to detail are what draw you in and the performances are excellent too. There are one or two 'look away' moments which is why people have labeled it 'a horror film' I suppose. But it's a 15 certificate so I was kind of expecting that.
I loved it. It reminded me of  Francis Ford Coppola's 'Dracula' in a way.

Black Mass

Here we have the latest Screen Unseen from Odeon. As you can see I bought this ticket back on the 8th October, such is my confidence in Odeons choice.
This one turned out to be Black Mass.
Johnny Depp plays James 'Whitney' Burger who, in the 1970's and 80's was Bostons most notorious gangster. He, together with the help of life long friend and FBI agent John Connoly (Joel Egerton) managed to murder, extort and generally 'gangster' his way to being almost untouchable..
OK let's start with the good points.. Both Depp and Egerton were excellent. There was also some nice supporting roles from the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Juno Temple and the ever Omnipresent Kevin Bacon amongst others.. Thats probably the ONLY good points to be fair.

My main problem seems to be the huge shadow of "Goodfellas" which hangs over the movie like an annoying teenager constantly pointing out how similar it is.. Goodfellas is 25 years old... 25 YEARS OLD..!?!? And I can still remember Joe Pesci's unhinged performance (and "spoiler" shocking death!) Plus the soundtrack... well mainly the full length version of Eric Claptons 'Layla' in the soundtrack.. And that's the main problem for me.. I CAN remember those aspects of the movie... I doubt I'll remember anything in this film in 25 years.. It was routine... Another 'meh'..
Which is a shame..
***... mainly for the leads performances..

Sicario

In Newport with eight hours to kill... Ummm what shall I do?

I missed this one on the weekend (it's another 2 hour long movie) so I grabbed a ticket for today's earliest showing.. (12.30?! Yeah, I know..!)

OK, basic synopsis - Emily Blunt plays a FBI hostage negotiator and at the start of the movie she and her team stumble apon a grewsome find during a raid in Arizona.. After this she's offered a chance to join Josh Brown in an 'unknown' organisation whose task is to find the man responsible.. That's the basic jist..

Initially it reminded me of 'Se7en' but as it progressed it morphed into something more in line with 'The Shining' and it's sense of impending doom.. Emily Blunt was... well, Emily Blunt. She can do no wrong in my eyes.. Josh Brown and Benicio DelToro also put in very convincing performances.. The whole tone of the movie was right up my street. The music also helped to create a really foreboding atmosphere.. Overall an excellent movie.
An easy ****.

The Walk

This one is based on the true story of a French high wire walker who, fastened a rope across the New York twin towers in 1974 and walked across it.

And that's the film basically.  At just over 2 hours its spread pretty thin..
I'm not sure if its Joseph Gordon-Levitt french accent or the (obvious) CGi Twin towers, but I just wasn't engaged with it. The best part is the last 10 mins and prior to that it was just filler..

Overall a fairly pointless **1/2 star movie.

The Martian (3D)

I had a ticket to see this on my birthday at an unlimited screening.. But it was not to be.
So, as a result I was chomping at the bit...
It had all the ingredients.
Ridley Scott
Sci-fi
... Yeah, that's all the ingredients you need..
OK, let's synopsosis... Mission to Mars goes belly up when a storm cuts it short. Crew take off.. Leave Matt Damon behind..
From the opening shot I was in love with this film.. I saw it in 3D, mainly due to time issues, and like 'Gravity' space looked absolutely gorgeous.. It was like looking out of the window of the Space Station (probably..)
Matt Damon was excellent... and as he was the only character for a large majority of the film he had to be..!
I loved this one.. An easy ****.

American Ultra

This was definitely the better of the two films I saw this weekend.
Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart play a couple of stoners living a pointless existence in small town America.  One day, whilst working at his dead end job in an empty petrol station, Jesse's character is approached by a lady who recites a phrase to him and thus unlocks the hidden, killer skills he unknowingly has.. And then it really kicks off..

I enjoyed this. Both Eisenberg and Stewart have a blast and being a 15 certificate gives it a certain punch (so to speak). It's got weapons, gore, comedy... comedy weapons.. all the ingredients required for an entertaining 96 minutes.. And after some of the 'meh' I've seen this was refreshing..

Overall an easy ****

No Escape

Meh..
Ended up in Cardiff early this weekend so I thought I'd try and get a film in.. I was a bit limited with the choices and ended up seeing this...
I'd seen Lake Bell recently in 'Man Up' and she was funny (plus put on a good English accent). I like Owen Wilson too.. He's another funny guy.. But here they're playing a married couple who've just relocated to a non-specific country on the Vietnamese border, and it's far from funny.. As soon as they arrive there's a revolution and an angry mob start slaughtering tourists, foreigners and generally anyone who looks at them funny..

I'm not quite sure what to make of this one.. Being a 15 certificate there was plenty of swearing and blood.  Pierce Brosnan turns up as a ex-pat who has a shady past and is probably about the best thing in it in my opinion.. It does pick-up slightly half way through but seriously I think our two leads are mis-cast.
Overall its a **1/2 movie.. and those stars are down to Bond himself..

Me, Earl and the Dying Girl

Another Screen Unseen and another corker from Odeon.
Here we find Greg (Thomas Mann), a young lad who spends his time blending in with every 'group' at school and making parody films with his 'co-worker' Earl (R J Cyler).  Then one day he's forced by his hippy parents (played by the excellent Connie Britton and Nick Offerman) into spending time with a newly diagnosed cancer sufferer, Rachel (Olivia Cook)..

Again this is not the sort of film I'd choose. I haven't seen "The Fault In Our Stars" but from what I've heard this is a funnier version.. Actually, to be honest I found this hilarious in places.. The movie references and parodies certainly helped..  It perhaps got a little too sentimental towards the end for my liking, but then it is a film about cancer so what d'you expect..
Overall, well worth seeing and another £5 well spent.. ***1/2

The Man from U.N.C.L.E

Ok, for those of you who live in a cave this film is based on the TV series that ran in the 60's.
It stars Henry Cavil and Armie Hammer who play CIA and Russian spy's (respectively) and are forced to team up with each other after a third party acquire a nuclear device and threaten to World War III..

Firstly the good points:
1) Alica Vikander's in it.
2) It's a Guy Richie film so you know the action's going to be stylish.
3) As well as the two leads Jared Harris and Hugh Grant are also there to add some class
4) Alica Vikander's in it.

Despite these above points the film seems to lack something.. I'm not sure if its the chemistry between the two leads?.... or that the dialogue's a bit clunky? I dunno..? All I can say is that from the man who gave us 2 excellent Sherlock Homes movies this seems a disappointment.  Christ! it even has Alica Vikander in it..

.. and that's the main reason it gets its **1/2..

Terminator Genisys

Ummm... Terminator 5, and another attempt to reinvigorate the franchise.
You could argue that this is the franchise that will not stop... ever.. Until you are dead.. This doesn't really carry on from the last movie but kind of jumps in somewhere in between the first two/three. If you haven't seen any of the previous movies good luck trying to understand this one! I struggled and I've see all the franchise (the first two numerous times)..
The trailer pretty much nailed this one. In other words it was rubbish.. They tried, give them their due. But in the end it really was hard work..
The effects were good.. But that's to be expected of a movie with the budget the size of a small country.
I'm not even gonna attempt to point out the failings... and there are many. Time travel is always tricky to portray successfully in movies..
I could go on but really can't be bothered..
Overall **1/2... it looks good..

Magic Mike XXL

It's Date Night! So, naturally I'm obliged to see a 'chick flick'. To be honest I'd see anything if it meant Liz would spend an evening with me..
Anyway, enough with the self pity, what about the film...?

This one picks up several years after the first Magic Mike and we find Mike (Channing Tatum) living his dream he talked about and making furniture.. Then he gets a call from one of his old stripper pals and ends up on the road with them, heading to a 'Stripper Convention' (?!?)... no more plot is required..

Well the general word in reviewing circles was that this film was rubbish.. And, as it turns out they were right..
Liz loved the first one and I enjoyed it too, what with my Channing Tatum man-crush. There were hints it was heading down the road to 'Pantsville' when I realised that not only had Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer jumped ship but also Stephen Soderbergh wasn't directing..

Minions (3D)

In Cardiff again this time on my own..
As you can see the film choice is limited so I went for an early showing of this one.. I've enjoyed the Dispicable Me films and the trailer for this one seemed amusing, but I wouldn't class myself as a fan..
In this showing was myself, a father and his daughter plus (disturbingly) two other single, middle aged blokes sat on there own.. Although I don't know why I said disturbingly, I was there...?!?

Anyway on with the film.. This one's a Minions origin story.. They start off as single cell beings and the first third of the film sees them progress though history until 3 of them decide to go off in search of a new boss to work for..
I shouldn't have liked this as much as I did but I found myself warming to their charm as the film went on. The subtle, background jokes always work for me and this film was full of 'em..

Tommorowland

OK, here's the official blurb..

"Whenever Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) touches a lapel pin with the letter T on it, she finds herself transported to Tomorrowland, a city filled with huge robots and sleek buildings. The gifted young woman recruits the help of scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney), a previous visitor to Tomorrowland, who years ago made a startling discovery about the future. Together, the two adventurers travel to the metropolis to uncover its mysterious secrets, as the fate of mankind hangs in the balance."
Now that sounds exciting doesn't it?.. I'm a sucker for a good science fiction movie and this one ticked all the boxes.. I was gripped throughout most of the film and was tempted to watch it again the next day..The two leads were good and, more importantly convincing. The special effects were top quality too. So why has it had such a bad rap? The last time I looked it's 'Rotten Tomatoes' score was 50%.. Which is pretty lame..
All I can say is I loved it! ****

Mad Max: Fury Road

I remember back in the early eighties when I was still in school and life hadn't repeatedly punched me in the face as it does today, Paul Windsor and I would often nip back to his house on Baycham Street to watch a pirate video or two.. VHS were at war with Betamax at the time and Paul' family had sided with VHS. This consequently offered him a larger library from which to chose.. Along with some dodgy porn and truly appalling horror films, one such diamond in the rough was Mad Max. To be fair the only two things I remember from that film were Pauls love of Max's car and scene featuring a half naked women (sorry, dodgy porn again..)
It wasn't until college and the superior Mad Max 2 that I started to take interest.. Fury Road has both these films DNA running right though it..
If you're looking for a plot synopsis I'll try... Basically Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Thereon) steals a truck and runs for the hills.. During the chase she manages to attract a couple of stragglers in the form of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and Nux (Nicolas Hoult avoiding being typecast and playing a hairless, white weirdo)..
To be fair, a plot is not really required for this movie..
When I first came out I struggled to register what I'd just seen.. Was that a mutant,  midget, baby man? Was a cesarian performed mid-chase? Was a man playing a flame powered guitar?? And more to the point, why?
Try to imagine a slim Barry from Eastenders and a one armed Sinead O'Conner driving though the desert in a Ford Capri on halftracks instead of wheels, being chased by the Great Goblin and the cast of Glee with their grandparents, brandishing 6 foot long bendy brooms with exploding brush heads. Throw in a few Victoria Secret models and some crows on stilts and you're somewhere near..

The fact that it's a 15 certificate is a welcome break from the current trend of 12a, child friendly tosh (Taken 3 anyone..?). The post apocalyptic set design was excellent too.
It's nice to see 'bat shit' crazy in a summer blockbuster and I thoroughly it..

The third and final movie of the night.. This one jumps straight into the action as we find our Avengers chasing down members of Hydra. After Tony Stark has a dodgy vision he decides to create an artificially intelligent robot to take the place of the Avengers... And it all kicks off..

I'm not sure if it was down to the long evening but this didn't seem to do it for me.. Not like the first one. And seeing the first one earlier probably didn't help.. Good Kill

Second film today and I was in two minds wether to see this or not..
It centers around Ethan Hawks Tom, an experienced piolet now 'flying' UAV's from an American airbase just outside Las Vegas. He's married to Molly (January Jones) and has two children. But all is not well in Toms world... He's suffering from a kind of post traumatic stress disorder and a borderline alcoholic. He misses the thrill of combat and, although he's the best at what he does he takes little pleasure in it. Slowly we see his marriage start to disintegrate..

This was an odd film. It seemed slow to get going... At one point I received a text off the wife saying "they're in town" and I was tempted to leave the screening and join them for a coffee..
Luckily I didn't and eventually the film paid off... Kind of..
In a way the film made the audience feel a lot like Tom... on autopilot.. There was some disturbing scenes but because they're 7000 miles away viewed on a small screen the impact was muffled (for want of a better word..). Once again Bruce Greenwood is excellent, and to be fair so are all the cast including Zoe Kravitz (whose getting better by the movie!)
Overall 3 desensitised stars..
